Digital Ethnography: Past, Present & What’s Next

Since the advent of the early internet, anthropology has had a somewhat tenuous relationship with what has come to be known as digital ethnography. Though online communities are certainly communities, are they qualitatively different from communities in the offline world? Theoretical and methodological questions arose: what is the relationship between online and offline worlds and how can ethnography better capture and explore it? What do we mean by “real” life? Is ethnography conducted entirely digitally somehow fundamentally different from a traditional on-the-ground approach? Though these conversations have simmered for decades—producing important and discipline-shaping scholarship—the quick, global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic seemingly brought a new urgency to questions about what it means to live and interact primarily online, and more scholars than ever before suddenly found themselves engaging in digital ethnography. With this in mind CASTAC is happy to announce our second annual CASPR (CASTAC in the Spring) event, titled “Digital ethnography: past, present, and what’s next.”
Join us for a roundtable discussion and Q&A with Ilana Gershon (Rice University), Patricia G. Lange (California College of the Arts), and Nicole Taylor (Texas State University), moderated by CASTAC Co-Chair Baird Campbell (Rice University)
